Olympic athletes visited one of the biggest coal mines of the Far East – Solntsevsky Coal Mine. The tour was organized by East Mining Company together with the Administration of Uglegorsk city district.

Coal mine was visited by our sports legends - Olympic champion in kayak rowing, Olympic silver medalist, two-time world champion, three-time silver medalist for World Championships, 12-time USSR champion, Honored Master of Sports of Russia Nina Trofimova, Olympic champion in volleyball, two-time World Championship medalist, World Cup winner, European champion, two-time champion of the USSR, winner of the Soviet Cup, Honored Master of Sports of Russia Lyudmila Zhigily, Olympic champion in basketball, Olympic bronze medalist, World Cup silver winner, two-time European champion, champion of Russia, Honored Master of Sports of Russia Irina Sumnikova, Olympic bronze medalist in athletics (triple jump), European champion, silver medalist at the European championship, two-time champion of Russia, winner of the European Cup, Honored Master of Sports of Russia Denis Kapustin.
The guests were shown the most up-to-date and efficient quarry machinery in Sakhalin – BelAZ dump trucks with a capacity of 220 tons. They also saw in action a unique EKG-20 excavator, made on special EMCO order. Its grab capacity was increased from the standard 20 cubic meters up to 22. Athletes had never seen such giant vehicles.
For example, the height of the excavator which they saw is 18 meters. Guests also visited the observation deck, from where they could see the entire Solntsevsky Coal Mine and the machinery in action.
Olympic Champions came to Sakhalin within the sports festival "Russia. Sports and children". This is a project of the national charity program “Olympic Legends for Children and Young People of Russia”. Its main goal is to promote sports and healthy lifestyles among children and youth. East Mining Company pays particular attention to the sports development in the Sakhalin region.
